It is set in the Northern Reaches of LoR a border between the Ice Kingdom of Azgos and Elarsa. A savage frontier of Barbarians that rule in an untamed wilderness.
Hyperboroi
It is ruled by the Great Chieftan Chargin Black Axe over scattered barbaric tribes each bound by the ancient bond of the Ancestral Spirits that reside within the Ancestral Mound: A Colossal Mountain that is said to be the gateway to the spirit realm.
Our tale concentrates on the Northern Region of Caladon, now ruled by its Chieftan Rastan and his wild beast of a wife Cala of Caladon, daughter of the late Chieftan Cain of Caladon.
Rastan returned victorious along with a party of Caladons heroes when quested by Caladons Chieftan Cain, to locate and return the Axe or Horan. In return, he would win the hand of Cala.
Rastan rose to power after the flesh eaters of the Maltori tribe murdered Cain and stole away Cala. Rastan led a party of brave warriors to rescue Cains’s Daughter which was his last command on his dying breath.
On their return they found Caladon in ruins burned to a crisp.
Discovering their loved ones dead or taken, they set out to rescue them and seek vengeance.
Their journey took them through the misty swamps of despair ruled by a giant serpent Molbath. Escaping her wrath they made their way into the Mountains of the Maltori.
Fighting their way through the tribe of the Maltori they found their townsfolk caged, some were roasted and half devoured, they rescued Grarkald’s Sister Bria who was ready to be roasted and had been ‘gnawed upon’, scarring her for the rest of her life both physically and mentally.
Locating Alaceenee, Cala and Brixham that hung over a burning pit ready to be sacrificed. Rastan Discovered the orchestrator of the downfall of Caladon.
Raol: Rastans oldest friend, who became besotted with Altea, Rastans Sister. But Brixam also had his eyes on the beautiful barbarian. Raol was no match for Brixam and his mind became stricken with dark thoughts as he made a pact with a dark ancient being Dialokōs – Dark Lord of the restless undead, who promised eternal life with the love of his life. Raol thought, if he could not have Altea, then no one would. Leading her to a high cliff, where Rastan was too late, Raol dragged her with him over the edge to be one forever in death.
Rastan, Fulgrim, Yemaya, Grarkald, D’har, and Turnus confronted Raol and his host: Aleta, Severl giant Dire Wolves, Maloroi Tribesman, Ice Trolls led by Gormak the Unbroken. While Rastan defeated Raol, Aleta, escaped into the darkness and Fulgrim defeated Gormak the Unbroken, using the Axe of Horan.
Returning to Caladon, they began to rebuild. During this time Rastan saved the Vrothgar Chieftan’s son, Svenson from beasts that dwelled in the northern woods. This won the favour of Sven and his son Svenson and Vrothgar became allies with Caladon.
During a feast to celebrate the friendship of Svenson and Rastan. A host arrived at the gates of Caladon. The Elarsans. Their force spread as far as they could see. Their Leader commanded Caladon to join them to help with a rising threat on their borders. A promise of glory and riches. Refuse, then they will be taken by force. The brave Caladons were ready to face this new threat of armoured warriors, who resembled their foreign friend, Turnus.
Turnus took Rastan to one side and warned that he could not win this battle. His people would be taken anyway, he also warned that they would not be considered equal and could not trust his kinsman. With Caladon still in ruins, and his people weary, he agreed to go with the Elarsans.
But as Turnus warned, the Elarsans baited Rastan’s people to rebel against harsh strict conditions. Svenson escaped, but Rastan and his people were shackled.
The warriors set to the gladiator pits while the rest were sent to the mines to help mine minerals to build armour and weapons to help with the Elarsan’s war.
Turnus, who acted as Alaceenees bodyguard, used his position to escape with Alaceenee and sought aid from Helgina, A Xerban Amazonian Pirate.
After many battles in the arena that saw Rastan kill Brixam and D’har, his Tiger, the barbarians were sent to the capital for a display for the king’s son’s birthday. But Helginea and Turnus freed Rastan and his remaining warriors along with other gladiators.
Returning to the Xerban’s secret base on a mist-shrouded island within the Broken Isles. Rastan devised a plan to rescue his wife Cala, Grakald’s Sister Bria and their town folk. Raiding the mine they freed their people and other slaves. Taking a long arduous journey facing off against many Elarsan patrols attempting to stop them they finally came to the beach where they were supposed to meet Helginas fleet. Instead, an Elarsan Fleet awaited.
An Elarsan Army began to march upon them from the land while the fleet launched more ahead of them. Rastan and his people were trapped,
But the Barbarians and freed slaves were not going back to the mines… They fought hard and when all seemed to be lost, out of the fog on the sea, Helginas fleet arrived. Destroying the Elarsan ships and assisting the fighting on the land. Rastan and his people were finally free and escaped with Helgina.
But Turnus, knew that Emperor Titus of Elarsa was locked in a war but if that war was ever over, the old king’s memory was long and unforgiving…
Rastan returned to Caladon with Grarkald, Turnus and the freed people. While Fulgrim and D’har travelled across the seas to Yemayaa’s home with her brother Dero to the Savanahs.
Caladon rebuilt, stronger than ever with the aid of Vrothgar.
In the 18 years that passed, Calan gave birth to Cahir their firstborn son and then Leena their daughter.
Turnus Married Aleceenee and soon had a son called Decimus, who grew strong and followed in his father’s footsteps who he revered.
Svenson arrived with his 15-year-old son Iyrgus Kallaghson and offered him as a charge for 10 years to honour his now-dead father and repay his debt to Rastan. Iyrgus, Decimus and Cahir became good friends. Often they would aid Decimus, who was not favoured by the younger folk of Caladon and considered a foreigner although born in Caladon.
When almost two decades of peace were upon them, an old memory returned when a stranger was cast up upon their shores of the river down by the docks, his body littered with claw and bite marks… The being was not human, but Shae-Du-Wyd, his sharp features and pointed ears betrayed his heritage. In his delirious fever-stricken state, he whispered over and over, They came in the fog, they devoured my people they killed, they are coming…
Rastan on hearing this was cast back to fond memories of his friend Yemayaa and her dreams and warning of the beasts in the fog are coming and will devour all they kill.
He longed for his old friends Yemaya, Fulgrim and D’har now a world away… So he thought.
D’har returned his tale was dark:
D’har had spent the years helping Yemayaa’s tribe battle against beast folk from the jungles. On one quest, D’har was lost from the Tribe of the Savanahs deep within the jungles of Raaz. Hearing a cry for help from a wounded animal, he charged into a clearing of an ancient temple. There a black Jaguar was surrounded by white apes armed with crude weapons, one struck the jaguar and it cried out in pain and fell, D’har raced to its defence against the White Apes which he slew and drove off. Turning he could not believe his eyes, where the Jaguar had fallen, now lay a beast woman half cat and half human. Taking her to safety, he spent several months in the jungle helping Jhana recover. Jhana agreed to help D’har return to the Savanahs because he saved her life. They became close in their time together.
But when D’har returned death followed…

D’har awoke from a nightmare of Yemayaa’s and Fulgrim’s demise. He soon joined Rastan and his companions in the great hall to see Cahir leave with an Iceguard Merchant heading to Vrothgar to trade furs as Winter was finally upon them and the snow is beginning to fall.
Soon after Cahir leave the Caladon Bell tolls and smoke can be seen in the East. Rastan leads a party of warriors to ride out towards Grarkalds Stables. After several hours, they arrive to see it burning and a scattering of dead horses and stable hands. But no sign of Grarkald and his sister Bria.
Searching the area they soon find Grarkald pinned to a post by a bone spear. With his dying breath, he pleads that Rastan hunts down the raiders and saves his sister.
Rastan and the party build a pyre and provide Grarkald and his hands a funeral before racing off in the direction of the raiders.
They soon arrive at the raider’s camp and a bloody battle ensues! With the Raiders slaughtered and the captives freed they are escorted safely back to Caladon.
On arrival a young rider races from the gates of Caladon… ‘Rastan! Come quickly! A messenger from the Black Axe has arrived demanding an audience!’

Session Overview:
Vosguardian, the last of the Elk Tribe, greeted Rastan and informed him that the alignment was only a couple of days away and that he was dispatched to bring Rastan to answer against allegations made by that Maltori. For crimes over a decade old. Also, his children must take the test of the ancients at the Ancient Mound, home of their ancestors.
The problem was that Cahir had left earlier that day for Vrothgar. A decision was made that if they left with haste, they could catch up to Cahir and return him to Caladon.
The group prepared to leave Caladon, Rastan said his farewells to Cala and his daughter Leena.
D’har, informed Jhana, his lover from the jungles of Raazz, who was not fairing too well in the cold! When she heard that he was leaving again, Jhana refused to be left behind and prepared to leave also.
Chamo made his way to the stables to collect his belongings and his mount a giant snowy owl, Artemis. But en route was accosted by the Bakers Dog. Narrowly escaping he made his way to prepare along the rooftops instead. Once ready he met with the others at the gates ready to leave.
Decimus was super excited and rushed home to grab his weapons and armour. Finally, a chance to show his worth in front of the Chieftan and a quest! His mother Amereecee fussed with him, and his father Turnus, warned him to listen carefully to Rastan and to stay close, but not too close! On his way to the gates he bumped into the smith’s daughter, Valara, she told him to return safely and handed him some rations for his journey. But Decimus’s archenemy Raygar butted in to say he hopes Decimus does not return and he can have Valara all to himself.
Iyrgus was preparing his horse when the legendary Ice Guard Heroine Thora Frostblade, rode into town. On seeing Irygus she dismounted and caught up. She told him she was heading to the Ancestral Mound to watch her good friend Jorunn take the test of the ancients.
Keryth was escorted to a sick old woman by her husband Njorn. He asked Keryth if he could cure the old woman. Keryth agreed to look for herbs on his journey through the woods.
Finally, they rode out of Caladon and crossed the river into the Northern forest. The Snow fell heavier and the wind howled all around them. Their horses were spooked, and several of the group began to jump at shadows.
Before long they were making their way out of the Northern Forest onto the Vrothgar Snow Fields, the road barely visible and rapidly disappearing in the snowfall. The wind was rising in speed and harassed them throughout their travel. Several of the group began to feel the effects of the icy winds and their excitement began to fade. But soon, they were met with a sight of dread…
The Caravan Cahir had left with lay shattered and thrown across the region. Searching they could not find any bodies, but Chamo and D’harr located a blood trail heading East towards the Frostbite Forest. They began to head towards the forest when a blizzard fell upon them, one by one they began to loose sight of each other!

Session Overview:
Following blood-stained tracks heading towards the Frostbite Forest and Frozen Peaks, with Urgency then ventured onwards.
A Blizzard swept in howling and swallowing all around them, barely able to see those beside them, they made for the sanctuary of the Frostbite Forest. Frozen to the bone, they made it. Some suffered from the blizzard more than others. Spirits started to waiver, hopes began to falter, but Rastan, determined to catch up with his son, urged the party ever onwards.
The journey through the Frostbite Forest gave them some respite from the blizzard howling through the trees. Eventually, they came across a corpse. Rushing to its side, they were both saddened and hopeful when they saw that it was one of the lceguard Caravan Guards and not Cahir.
Needing shelter and rest, they debated whether to stop or press on. But Rastan restless and eager to catch up with his son, pressed hard. Morale fell and the group pressed onwards.
Eventually leaving the confines of the forest and out onto the Snow Drifts, there the blizzard had stopped but the snow continued to fall heavily. Through the snowstorm, a howl rose and they found themselves attacked by Frost Wolves! The battle was brutal and costly…

Session Overview:
Jhana defeated by the Frost Wolves lay in Dhar’s arms—pain coursing through Dhar’s very being. He could not bear to lose another friend, especially one as close as Jhana. The party gathered around, Rastan caved and said they must seek shelter and rest before pressing onward to save his son.
Finally arriving in a clearing back in the Frostbite Forest. A fire was built and they began to thaw out and felt joy at the sense of warmth creeping back into their body.
Jhana, gasping her last breaths died as they failed to heal her in time. A funeral was given and her ashes spread to the winds.
OOPS!! I forgot about the resuscitation rules! See the beginning of the next session as I backtrack to this point and allow them one last chance to save her!
With the loss of Jhana weighing heavy on their conscious, they continued onwards hoping they would save Cahir in time.
Leaving the Frostbite Forest once more, they continued through the great snow drifts pressing ever onward and making little ground through the deep snow.
Several members of the party began to feel the weight of the journey as exhaustion began to creep up on them. Rastan set a heavy pace, urgency driving him onwards.
Before long, they came across a wooded region and in its centre was a circle of trees with strange markings and skulls tied to them. Iyrgus destroyed one of the skulls as others began to examine them. The skull’s eyes glowed red and they determined that they were magical. Chamo said the symbology here was shamanic, recognising it from the teaching in the monastery. Fearful that they were some sort of border markers and that the totems had somehow alerted the Trolls to their presence, they pressed on.
Coming across an ancient battlefield skeletons of the deceased littered the area along with their weapons. As the party surveyed the area, suddenly some rose and charged the party. A mighty battle was fought many of the party were injured. Would they suffer the same fate as Jhana?

As mentioned in the last session, I forgot the resuscitation rules when Jhana was dead… But did she survive?
Since it was my fault I forgot the rules existed I decided to back track and allow the chance to revive Jhana. After all the rule was put in to give players and fragile sidekicks a chance of survival. After many Hero Levels Jhana survived and is now being helped along as she recovers with Level 5 Hindrance! Will she survive to see another session? Read on…
Silence filled the battlefield as the last Skeleton crumbled lifeless once more to the snow-covered battlefield. Puzzled Rastan can not fathom how they are encountering everything and the trolls are not… Searching the battlefield for clues to who and when this battle was fought gave very few clues, except that Iyrgus recognised the designs of the shield to a long-lost Nordian tribe.
Meanwhile, Dhar and Chamo, found tracks heading into the foothills of the Frozen Peak Mountains. The tracks appeared to belong to trolls. So they headed off in the direction of the tracks.
Eventually rounded a hill in a snow-covered valley they heard screams of fear and the roar of a beast. Charging out of the snowy fog a small blue-skinned creature ran towards them, the appearance of a child being chased by a large bear.
The Barbarians clashed with the beast and saved the child who introduced himself as Thaldrin. After questioning the child they learn he is a troll from a place called Glacier Hold. Rastan and the party let the boy lead them back towards his village. Silence of purpose fell across the party…
Before long as they became close to the village, a lone female troll out calling for Thaldrin came across them… She hissed and growled but could see she was outnumbered, and worse they had her child. She begged them not to hurt him.
After a long debate, they learned that she belonged to a small tribe and her tribe did not have a Rastan child. She agreed to lead them to speak with the leader of the Tribe, he may help them…

Session Overview:
Travelling through the hidden valley, led by Eldra, an Ice Troll. The party soon found themselves entering Glacierhold. An Ice Troll village cradled in the secret valley.
After being escorted through the village to the elder’s hall, they were invited in as guests. After explaining their plight and asking if the Trolls could point them in the right direction, The Chief of the Trolls listened intently, but his head advisor a shaman, did not like the group’s arrival. He fought hard to dissuade the chief from assisting the strangers. However, saving the chieftain’s son had won the party a great boon.
After a battle of words, and threats from both sides and once everyone had calmed down. The Chief agreed to help them enter the Caverns of Frost & Fury where Rastans son Cahir is most likely taken.
Deciding to great up for a few hours, the party reflected on what had transpired and began to recover from their arduous journey. With the Blizzard gone Artemis arrived along with D’hars hawk.
Once recovered they were ready to press on. This time with a couple of Ice Trolls guides to show them the secret way into the caverns.
Travelling across the shattered plains a large expanse of glacier, which shifted and cracked beneath them, they managed to avoid the opening of a huge chasm.
The trolls led them across and into another valley. ‘Not long now’ Suddenly a patrol of Ice Trolls emerged and a battle began…

Walking into an Ice Troll Patrol from the Caverns of Frost & Fury, the Barbarians of Caladon find themselves in a gruelling battle.
But finally, some teamwork pays off and they dispatch the Trolls.
Rastan pushes onward through the mountains after Keryth decides to mutilate one of the Trolls for, spell components…
The Troll guides are not happy at all. But eager to return to their tribe, they continue to guide the Heroes to the hidden entrance through Whispering Pass.
As they weave their way up the mountainside along a narrow snow-covered path. Rastan struggles slightly with his footing sending shivers down his spine, with fear of falling.
Eventually, they see a ring of ancient standing stones within a forest clearing below them through the mist that is rising from the forest.
Chamo circles below, and sees that the circle stands silent. The Trolls explain that the circle of stones have always been there and are very old. The party is about to continue onwards and decides to return later to investigate until, Decimus agrees with Rastan’s decision to continue, saying that Rastans strength may not hold up as he appears to be struggling along the path.
Rastan feels challenged by the comment and decides that he is going to prove he can climb down, and starts to make his way over the cliff’s edge towards the stones below. Reluctantly the party follow.
As they climb, large clumps of snow fall from above and almost force them from the edge of the cliff…
Most of the party makes it down, except Keryth who falls from a great height and lands head first onto the valley floor below!
Does Keryth survive the fall on a fool’s errand? Or is this as far as he goes? Find out in the next episode of Barbarians of Caladon!

to return to their tribe, they continue to guide the Heroes to the hidden entrance through Whispering Pass.
This was a short session due to time restraints… However not without exciting action!
With a resounding crack, Keryth crashed to the floor from his fall of 15m! Landing on his head & shoulders it did not look good for the Shae-Du-Wyd.
The party rushed him to a stone altar in the circle of Stones and started to revive him. It was touch and go, but Keryths eyes flickered open and he was in immense pain. But that pain was about to leave him vulnerable!
Suddenly bursting from the trees about them a pack of Ghouls rushed the party who were either gathering themselves after the fall or tending to Keryths wounds.
A gruelling battle took place. The creatures lept upon the party, biting necks and tearing chunks out of arms. One by one the Ghouls fell… But as Keryth tried to escape, one landed on his back taking a large piece of his neck with a single bite.
Keryth attempted to crawl to safety beneath the stomping feet of combatants.. making it just to the outer ring of the stone circle, before collapsing, blood pouring into the snow from his open wound.
Dispatching the Ghouls, once more the party raced to Keryths side, attempting first aid to no success… Keryth breath became wheezy and shallow.
The party hastily attempted to revive Keryth but with no success. After a last struggle speech, Keryth passed to the afterlife. The first of the party not to be returning home to Caladon.

Building a pyre the party said their farewells to Keryth.
They then decided to explore the circle of stones. Eventually, they noticed something about the altar with its strange markings. Through Barbarian logic.. they accidentally opened a secret compartment. Finding some ancient objects within they snatched them up and decided to continue on their journey to rescue Cahir son of Rastan.
With the help of the Trolls, they were pulled up to the safety of the path above.
Before long they came to a gaping hole in the side of the mountain. Their guides warned that they should proceed with caution and stealth… But stealth is not the Barbarian party’s strength.
Descending down into the depths of the mountain, they could hear a deep rumbling. The Troll guides warned that there is a beast here and they should not wake it. So, they climbed down stealthily… But climbing as we have discovered is also not a strength they possess as a Party.
Noisily they descended with a mix of curses and sliding until they reached the cavern floor. The beast stirred from its slumber and came to investigate.
Hiding behind rocks and icy columns. The beast hunted them through the ice caves. Eventually, they decided to make a run for a small gap in the cavern wall.
The beast unable to pursue breathed an icy burst after them. Barely escaping with minor injuries, they pressed onward deeper into the frozen caverns.
Stepping out into a large frozen chamber, they came across a colossal being encased in ice…

Session Overview:
Facing a colossal being encased in ice captivated both their awe and their fear… The troll guides warned not to look at it or to listen to the wind… The Trolls pressed onward through the cave.
Each party member heard or saw things in the frosty mist that swept through the cave. Each faced a fear that sent shivers through their body. They hurried to pass through and get away from the whispers and the sights that caused them fear.
In their haste to escape the chamber, stealth was almost lost as they tripped and fell on the icy surface stumbling over each other to leave.
Their Troll guides motioned them to be silent and warned if they were discovered now, getting to the throne would be near impossible and any hope to save Cahir would be lost.
They soon came to a narrow icy bridge which spanned a deep chasm that fell into the frosty fog below. Above there were several bridges crisis crossing across the chasm.
One by one, they attempted to cross the slippery narrow bridge, almost to success with a few struggling attempts. Until Irygus got halfway across and fell. Thanks to an expertly thrown spear just at the right time, Irygus was able to get a handhold and hang from the bridge. Rastan raced back, catching hold of his arm just in time. Dragging him to safety Rastan helped Irygus across.
But it was too late that they were discovered. But the Troll Shaman with them lets loose an icy bolt striking the bridge above, bringing it down along with the Trol that discovered them. However, it wouldn’t be long before a patrol came to investigate. So they raced for the Throne Room only to find the way blocked…

The barbarians were torn between facing the Colossal Sentinal that blocked their way and racing past it and up the icy stairs to rescue Cahir before their time ran out.
Rastan called it, save Cagir! One by one they raced past the Colossal. Avoiding the giant fist crashing down upon them. There were some close calls and Decimus almost crushed beneath the ice fist.
Nursing their wounds in a side tunnel they took their time to catch their breath before moving on. The party soon came to a ritual room where the shamanic trolls were harnessing the power of the Eclipse. The mountain shook as something ancient and deep began to stir beneath their feet. Large chunks of icy rock began to fall about them.
The Troll guides pointed to a stairway heading up to the Throne Room, their final obstacle! Charging up the stairs, the stairs began to shake, crack and break away to the chasm below. The Barbarians with a struggle, helping each other made it to the top all except a few of the party who began to fall.
The rest arriving at the top, were charged by the Troll guards!
